Big Data, Cybersecurity, and the Dangers of Economic Espionage

Washington, D.C.: Amidst growing concerns over cyber security and Stuxnet-like computer worms, the Diplomatic Courier announces today's release of Volume 6, Issue 6 of the magazine.

Mike Baker, formerly with the Central Intelligence Agency and currently President and Co-Founder of Diligence LLC, focused his cover story on "Better Late than Never: Dealing with the Dangers of Economic Espionage."

"As our cover story illustrates, while Cybersecurity features large on every news outlet out there and Iran, Afghanistan, U.S.-Pakistan, and North Korea point to growing security tensions, the most serious threat to national security is economic espionage," said Ana C. Rold, Editor-in-Chief. "Though he claims to not be an expert, Mike Baker speaks from a position of authority-after all he has spent a good part of his life either protecting or acquiring secrets. Corporate espionage is not new but the Internet is facilitating its success in unprecedented form. This alarming trend puts American companies especially at a disadvantage."

Each author in this edition dissected a particular aspect of international security, including:

  • "Big Data Analytics and the Economics of Organized Violence," by Gary Schiffman, President and CEO of Giant Oak, a data analytics company, and professor at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
  • "Information Superiority: Making Big Data Actionable," by Andrew Serwin, CEO and Executive Director of The Lares Institute, founding chair of the Privacy, Security & Information Management Practice and partner, Foley & Lardner LLP
  • "Duck and Cover: Cyber Instability," and "Brain-in-the-Loop Integration: CT2WS Enters Next Phase," by Chrisella Herzog, Managing Editor, Diplomatic Courier
  • "What Lies Beneath the ‘Anonymous' Hack of Stratfor," by Whitney Grespin, operations specialist, Atlantean
  • "Taipei's Cyberwarfare Gambit," by Paul Nash, China Correspondent, Diplomatic Courier
  • "The Future of Cybersecurity Legislation: Will Congress Act," by E. Pierce Blue, Contributor Editor, Diplomatic Courier

This edition also featured such topical pieces as:

  • "Foreign Aid a Critical Component to Mideast Stability," by Robert Brada, Co-Founder and President of Blue Sky Building Systems, and member of the Board of Directors of International Relief & Development (IRD)
  • "The Globally Crystallizing Climate Change Event, A Wikistrat Crowdsourced Simulation," by Thomas P.M. Barnett, Chief Analyst, Wikistrat
  • Book Review: "The Unraveling: Pakistan in the Age of Jihad," by Joshua C. Huminski, Contributing Editor, Diplomatic Courier

Two interviews provide in-depth commentary of diplomatic and business life. H.E. Ilhom Nematov, Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United States, discussed his country's economy, tourism, and human rights with the Diplomatic Courier. Steve Lucas, executive vice president of SAP's global Database & Technology (D&T) organization, delved into the nuances of data protection in this mobile world.

Capturing the eternal beauty of humanity in the face of conflict, Casey Coomb's photography gallery depicts images of everyday life in Yemen.

The previous September/October 2012 edition published the "99 Under 33," an international list recognizing the most influential foreign policy leaders under the age of 33. The complete list is available in this edition and at: www.diplomaticourier.com/99Under33.
