Japan is taking new approaches to addressing global health concerns, as well as its own domestic health challenges, utilizing technology and tapping into the power of public private partnerships like never before. At the forefront of these efforts is Dr. Shiro Konuma, Director of Global Health Policy Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

In this video, Dr. Konuma discusses the state of global health in modern Japan. Challenges associated with achieving the Millennial Development Goals, utilizing technology to reach high risk populations and opportunities for greater impact via public private partnerships are addressed.

In addition to his current position with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan, Dr. Konuma also sits on the board of the Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT), a non-profit organization that works to promote the discovery and development of new health technologies, including drugs, vaccines and diagnostics to combat infectious diseases prevalent in developing countries. The first partnership of its kind in Japan, the GHIT Fund is a public private partnership established by the Government of Japan, an array of pharmaceutical companies, and the BIll and Melinda Gates Foundation.

A graduate of Faculty of Medicine, the University of Tokyo, Dr. Shiro Konuma worked for the University of Tokyo Hospital until joining Japanese diplomatic service in 1994. In 1996, he studied at INSEAD in France. Prior to his current position, he was Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva, where he oversaw development and macro-economic issues in the World Trade Organization.
