Russia's anger at the perceived 'Western conspiracy' to wrench Ukraine out of the Russian sphere of influence boiled over this past weekend, as Russian troops were sent into Crimea, purportedly to protect ethnic Russians from violent actions from 'radicals' in Ukraine's interim government. World leaders, including President Obama, have called the move an violation of international law, and reportedly all of the G8 leaders have suspended plans for traveling to Sochi for the annual G8 leaders' meeting. Russia told the UN Security Council that it moved unilaterally due to the West's support and instigtation of the unrest in Ukraine, and would not back down until the international community agreed to help Russia enforce the February 21st agreement between Yanukovych and opposition forces and reinstate Yanukovych as Ukraine's President until the scheduled elections in December. The United States is considering implementing sanctions against Russia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joined U.S. President Obama at the White House on Monday, and President Obama planned to push more aggressively for action on an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan. “If you see no peace deal and continued aggressive settlement construction—and we have seen more aggressive settlement construction over the last couple years than we’ve seen in a very long time,” Obama said. “If Palestinians come to believe that the possibility of a contiguous sovereign Palestinian state is no longer within reach, then our ability to manage the international fallout is going to be limited.”
