EU-Israel-PalestineIn an era in which the Middle East is in a period of great flux, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict seems to be at a standstill with no prospect of change. While Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Morocco and Libya have experienced political changes to varying degrees, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory are wedged in perpetual disagreement, conflict and political strife. Although the West continues to seek a way to overcome this impasse, the United States cannot bring the parties to the table for meaningful negotiations. Decades of failed negotiations have shown the inability of different U.S. administrations to mediate a just peace. For many in the region, the U.S. has lost legitimacy and thus cannot act as a constructive player in peace talks. We must move away from the notion that the U.S. is indispensable in bringing the Palestinians and the Israelis to the negotiating table. In this context, the European Union (EU) has an opportunity to become a more prominent figure in mediating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and advancing the moribund Peace Process.
