Akshan de Alwis attends Columbia College as a prestigious John Jay Scholar. Akshan has published on political transitions around the world in the Huffington Post, the Georgetown Law Asia Forum, the Turkish Policy Quarterly, the Diplomatic Courier and the Boston Globe. While in high school, Akshan won national Gold and Silver Awards from the Scholastic Writing Contest and was published in The Best Teen Writing of 2013–an anthology of the most notable work from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards selected for publication out of the 230,000 works submitted. Akshan has worked in Bangladesh, Romania, Burma, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Turkey on programs on human rights and youth and democratic participation. He helped to build the Youth for Youth Democratic Participation program in Burma. Akshan is a researcher for the United Nations Conference of the States Parties, UN DESA, 2014.
